A good coach can make a huge difference to a freelancer’s life and career.
Every now and again I think of another way in which coaching can help, then jot down that reason.
Funny thing is, I have got into the habit of writing down each observation in exactly 25 words.
I know. Odd.
If you were to ask me why, I would have to say I have no idea, or have forgotten. At some point I must have thought it was a good plan.
If you really pressed me, I think I would conclude that by imposing that constraint I was forcing myself to pay attention and to think carefully before I began to write.
In that regard, I like constraints.
When I am working with a coaching client I will often ask them to write down their long-term vision for their business in just 10 words or less.
If I said 100 words, I would likely just get waffle. When I say 10 words, I am forcing my client to think hard and to figure out the very best and most elegant way to express that vision.
So that’s my best guess. When I began to write down the various reasons I thought coaches could help freelancers, I probably insisted to myself that I use exactly 25 words to impose a constraint on myself. To force myself think carefully.
